Promoting a Positive Learning Environment
Las Palmas has extensive reward systems in place to recognize the outstanding efforts of our students. In addition to individual classroom programs in which children earn privileges, schoolwide programs also recognize positive behaviors.
We have implemented the Character Counts Program which is supported by the Orange County Sheriff's Department and local San Clemente businesses. Students are rewarded for demonstrating the values of fairness, caring, respect, responsibility, citizenship, and trustworthiness. Teachers recognize these students during the opening ceremony.
In addition, teachers in grades 3-6 select several students to receive the Piper Pride Card each trimester. They are chosen using the following guidelines: academic achievement, daily work habits, and service to others.
In an extensive districtwide survey of the community, Las Palmas was ranked third out of 45 for excellence in instructional programs, teachers and teaching, and support services. In the overall ranking of the 45 schools, Las Palmas was ranked 12th by the community. There are two recognitions per week of students. At Monday’s opening flag ceremony, students’ academic achievements are recognized. On Fridays, citizenship is recognized. Students who collect 50 or more Piper Awards have “Breakfast with the Principal” at the end of the year. Individual and classroom perfect attendance is recognized once each trimester.
